Some rooms lift ideas up. Others carry them for a while. The good ones do both without asking you which.

What they share is not a style. There are Kyoto machiya that do it. There are Brooklyn lofts that do it. There are farmhouses in the Blue Mountains that do it. They share a quality of held silence. Nothing in the room competes for the idea. Everything in the room waits for it.

Restraint is expensive because it is not the absence of things. It is the presence of choices. Every object earns its place, or it is gone.
