
The tiny switch that runs everything.
In December 1947, at Bell Labs in New Jersey, two physicists named John Bardeen and Walter Brattain demonstrated a small device that could amplify and switch electrical signals with no moving parts and almost no power. They called it the transistor, and it is, by a wide margin, the most manufactured object in human history. There are more transistors on Earth right now than there are stars in our galaxy, by a factor of many billions.
To understand why it matters, picture what it replaced. Early computers ran on vacuum tubes, fragile glass bulbs the size of a light globe that ran hot, burned out constantly and filled entire rooms to do arithmetic a modern calculator laughs at. The transistor did the same job, a controllable electrical switch, but tiny, cool, reliable and cheap, and crucially it could be shrunk, again and again, further than anyone dreamed.
That shrinking is the whole story of modern technology. Engineers learned to etch transistors onto slivers of silicon, then to pack more and more onto each chip, roughly doubling the count every couple of years for decades. A switch that started as a device you held in your hand is now so small that tens of billions fit on a chip the size of a fingernail. Every calculation your phone makes, every pixel it lights, is billions of these switches flicking on and off.
It is the quiet foundation under the loud revolution. We talk about the internet, artificial intelligence, the smartphone, but all of them are just enormous, intricate arrangements of this one humble component, doing the only thing it does, which is to let one current control another.
The lesson is that the deepest inventions are often the most invisible. Nobody buys a transistor or thinks about one. It is a primitive, a building block, and its power comes precisely from being simple, reliable and endlessly repeatable. The grand things are made of vast numbers of small, boring, perfect parts.
