Steal like an artist.
Austin Kleon began not as a designer or a guru but as a writer who made poems by taking a newspaper and blacking out most of the words until the ones that remained said something new. That method, making something original by subtracting from something that already existed, turned out to be his whole philosophy in miniature, and he built it into a small, enormously influential body of work about how creativity actually happens.
His central idea, borrowed and remixed as he would insist all ideas are, is that nothing comes from nothing. Every artist you admire is a product of everything they took in and reassembled. The anxiety of originality, the belief that you must invent something from a blank void, is not just paralysing, it is based on a myth. No one does that. What creative people actually do is pay close attention to what moves them, collect it, and combine their influences into something that is theirs precisely because no one else has that exact combination.
So his advice is practical and freeing. Do not wait to know who you are. Copy the people you love, many of them, until the overlap between your borrowings becomes a voice. Keep a swipe file of things that spark you. Share what you are into before you feel expert, because generosity attracts the people you want to find. He treats creativity not as a gift a few people are born with but as a set of habits anyone can practise.
What makes his work matter is its permission. Millions of people are frozen at the start line by the belief that unless an idea is wholly new, it does not count. Kleon dismantles that belief gently and completely. Your taste, the specific set of things you love, is already original. Your job is not to invent from nothing but to remix from everything, honestly, in public, and to let the collision of your influences become your signature.
The freeing move is to stop guarding against influence and start gathering it on purpose. Fill yourself with the work you love. Steal the parts that speak to you. Combine them into something only you would have made.
