The right notebook is one that mildly resists you. Not so much that it stops you from writing. Just enough that the idea has to earn the page.

Cheap notebooks are permission slips. Expensive notebooks are altars. The middle option, the well made but honest one, is a collaborator.

The physicality of the thing matters more than we admit. A cover that opens flat. Paper that takes ink without spreading it. A ribbon you can find in the dark. All of these are quiet decisions someone else made so that you would show up more often.

Design at its best is a series of small kindnesses inflicted on a future version of a stranger. This is one of them.
